St. Mary of Gostyn has been a part of the Downers Grove community for 125 years. To celebrate that milestone, and to commemorate all previous parishioners who have given their time and talents to the community, SMG is holding a special “Community Service Day”. The event is open to anyone wanting to participate and help out, including the parish community and their families and friends. SMG’s Community Service Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 1, 2016.
Participants will go out into the community to help with a variety of service projects for various organizations around town. Maureen Kalas, a parishioner at St. Mary of Gostyn, is the coordinator of this special service day. “Planned events are designed to appeal to all ages, interests, and skills,” said Kalas. “We have ten projects to choose from, including creating and delivering small centerpieces to brighten the common areas at Oak Trace Nursing Home and making creative cards to thank our military for their service.”
Other projects include building birdhouses for the Downers Grove Park District to be installed at the DG Municipal Golf Course, rolling cloth bandages for use in developing countries, clean-up projects at the SMG parish, and filling drawstring bags with travel-size toiletries and gifts for PADS (homeless shelter) guests.
“When we thought about how to celebrate SMG’s 125th anniversary in the context of how we are a part of the community, we came up with these special service projects,” said Kalas. “St. Mary of Gostyn is special because of the sense of community between the school, parents, and parishioners; we wanted to nurture that and reflect on our broader goals of helping the less fortunate, reconnecting with each other as a parish, and strengthening SMG’s role within the community.”
