Having a church family and home is an important aspect of many people’s lives.  The loving atmosphere, the strong social network, and the faith-based education that a church provides can have a positive impact in the lives of its parishioners.

St. Mary of Gostyn Catholic Church celebrates its 125th anniversary this year.  As the oldest Catholic Church in Downers Grove, St. Mary’s began serving its community in 1891.  Although the Archbishop of Chicago initially denied their church petition, as it was thought the small number of families would be unable to provide needed support, one group of parishioners felt strongly enough about establishing the church that they donated enough land to hold a church, a rectory, and a convent.

It’s that kind of faith and dedication that parishioners at SMG carry on today.  Dianne Czopek and her husband have been members of St. Mary’s for 40 years.  Upon moving to the Downers Grove area, their search for a Catholic school for their four children led them to SMG.  “The minute we walked into church for Mass that first Sunday, I knew St. Mary’s would be our spiritual home,” said Czopek.  “Words cannot explain how loving, compassionate, kind, and caring the people at SMG church and school are.  Our children received an outstanding education from loving, dedicated teachers.  St. Mary of Gostyn Parish and School is our home.”

Deacon Bob Miciunas describes SMG as a faith-filled, loving, and generous community of believers.  “There are many ministries offered to parishioners, there’s something for everyone,” he said, adding, “Our school and religious education programs are very strong, and many of our youth are participating in ministries both before and after confirmation.”

The parishioners at St. Mary of Gostyn cherish its 125-year tradition which is rich in faith, education, service, and community.  From the humble beginnings of 25 families, SMG has grown into a community of more than 2,800 families who call this special parish and church home.
