SMG Garden over the summer
The Parish has a need for regular maintenance of the SMG Children's Garden just south of the lower parking lot. Many of you have probably played and planted there in the past. There are six raised beds and two will be planted by the school children, however the others are available for planting with vegetables and herbs for use by the patrons of the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry. We would love to plan a planting day to plant seeds and seedlings in late May or early June and then have a sign up for teen helpers to sign up for a week where they come every couple days to check on the plants for watering, weeding or harvesting. The total time commitment for each sign up is two hours or less.
The idea is you and and friend sign up for one week in say, July, and you visit the garden M-W-F of that week (or other days that are convenient) at times that are convenient for you. You will have access to tools from the shed. You go to the garden, get the tools, water if the ground is dry or the plants look wilted, weed if needed, and harvest veggies that are ready to be taken to the pantry. We will make a place for harvested veggies to be left at the food pantry if you are working at a time when the food pantry is not open.
It would be great to get teams to work 2 or 3 weeks over the summer. Mrs. Russotiesi will put together a calendar and email or text reminders before your week starts. Instructions will be emailed before you start the work with reminders in the shed or on the shed bulletin board. We'd love photos of you working or what the garden looks like during your visits for an on line blog - writing contributions are welcome too.
We hope this will be a fun and rewarding experience. Thank you for considering this project. Sincerely, The SMG Garden Committee
