School - Academics - Middle School Mathematics

Students in Middle School Mathematics will acquire knowledge of mathematics and the ability to apply math skills learned to solve problems, extended activities and hands on experiences.

Sixth grade
students will learn and apply the use of mathematical operations to a variety of operations such as

  • Decimal, fraction and integer operations, using formulas expressions, and equations
  • Identify and use patterns and number theory, chart compare
  • Graph and analyze data
  • Solve equations that contain a variable
  • Find area, perimeter and volume, identify types of polygons, identify ratio and proportion
  • Measure in customary and metric systems
  • Be able to identify parallel lines, perpendicular lines, line segments, points, rays, angels and planes


Seventh grade
math will learn and apply the use of mathematical operations to a variety of operations such as

  • Use powers and scientific notation
  • Use formulas, expressions and equations
  • Use ratio, proportion, percent and probability in various applications
  • Graph and analyze data
  • Multiply, add, subtract and divide algebraic equations
  • Solve quadratic equations and square roots
  • Add and subtract polynomials
  • Find and interpret the slope of a line
  • Use measures of central tendency to describe data


Eighth grade
math will learn and apply the use of mathematical operations to a variety of operations such as

  • Know and apply decimal notation
  • Use powers and scientific notation
  • Use formulas, expressions and equations
  • Use ratio, proportion and percent in various applications
  • Graph and analyze data
  • Solve equations using order of operations including exponents
  • Find area, perimeter of 2-D and 3-D figures
  • Measure in customary and metric systems
  • Recognize and identify characteristics of lines, angles, polygons and 3-D figures


Academic Information
The curriculum stresses achievement within a Catholic community.
The Diocesan curricular guidelines, consistent with the Illinois guidelines, are followed.
