Welcome to Kindergarten!
St. Mary of Gostyn Kindergarten is comprised of two classrooms each with accredited teachers. In K-1 Sister Michael teaches with her full time aide, Sister Lorraine. Mrs. Sarah Malik teaches K-2 with her full time aide, Mrs. Mary Mahlke.
Children will learn a variety of subjects leaving them well prepared for the years of schooling to come. They will develop positive work habits by learning to use their time efficiently. They will develop socially by gaining confidence, learning to adapt to different situations, exhibiting leadership and accepting the leadership of others. They will learn to exhibit self-control by sharing and taking turns, listening without interrupting within adequate attention spans.

There will be daily homework and a reading book. Along with the curriculum listed below, kindergarten will also study music, art, science, social studies and gym.
Language Arts, Phonetics and Reading Readiness
Using the Roland Reading Program the children will learn to read, understand the progression from left to right, recognize and match upper and lower case letters, recall and create their own endings to stories. They will be taught that printed words have meaning and comprehension skills such as sequencing and retelling a story.
Mathematics
Children will be able to:
- Identify shapes: triangles, circles squares, etc.
- Identify, arrange and create various patterns
- Sort and classify different objects by size, color and shape
- Understand graphs
- Count objects in a set
- Match numbers with objects
- Understand the concept of zero
- Recognize the numbers 1-100
- Count by ones, fives and tens
- Count backwards from 20
- Understand number values (1-20)
- Understand object correspondence
- Use "manipulatives” to solve problems and to perform basic addition and subtraction
- Group numbers; more, less, equal, not equal, tallying
Religion
Religion is an integral part of everyday life at St. Mary of Gostyn Church by attending some school liturgies and para-liturgies.
Religion at St. Mary’s will:
- Teach awareness of the gift of creation from a loving and caring God
- Teach about Jesus as our Savior and brother
- Encourage the child to continue prayers at home
- Teach them the sign of the cross, the Hail Mary, the Our Father, prayer before meals and encourage spontaneous prayer
