Welcome to Kindergarten!


St. Mary of Gostyn Kindergarten is comprised of two classrooms each with accredited teachers. In K-1 Ms. Jamrozek teaches with her aide, Mrs. Kelly. Mrs. Sarah Malik teaches K-2 with her aide, Mrs. LaBianco.


Children will learn a variety of subjects leaving them well prepared for the years of schooling to come.  They will develop positive work habits by learning to use their time efficiently. They will develop socially by gaining confidence, learning to adapt to different situations, exhibiting leadership and accepting the leadership of others. They will learn to exhibit self-control by sharing and taking turns, listening without interrupting within adequate attention spans.

Special Kindergarten Activities:

  • Hosting an all-school mass
  • Religious Celebrations – monthly Mass attendance, Ash Wednesday, Stations of the Cross during Lent, Blessing of the Throats
  • Fifth-grade/Kindergarten Faith Buddy projects
  • A Week with Corduroy the Bear – each student documents his week with Corduroy.
  • Special Person of the Week
  • Halloween Party & Trick or Treating
  • St. Nicholas Visit
  • Christmas Program in the Church
  • 100th Day of School Celebration

There will be daily homework.  Along with the curriculum listed below, kindergarten will also study music, art, science, social studies and gym.

Language Arts, Phonetics and Reading Readiness

Using the McGraw Hill, Wonders reading series the children will develop in the 5 areas of 1) phonological awareness, 2) comprehension, 3) writing, 4) word study, 5) phonics.



Children will be able to:

  • Identify shapes: triangles, circles squares, etc.
  • Identify, arrange and create various patterns
  • Sort and classify different objects by size, color and shape
  • Understand graphs
  • Count objects in a set
  • Match numbers with objects
  • Understand the concept of zero
  • Recognize the numbers 1-100
  • Count by ones, fives and tens
  • Count backwards from 20
  • Understand number values (1-20)
  • Understand object correspondence
  • Use "manipulatives” to solve problems and to perform basic addition and subtraction
  • Group numbers; more, less, equal, not equal, tallying


Religion is an integral part of everyday life at St. Mary of Gostyn School.

Kindergarten students will be:

  • Taught awareness of the gift of creation from a loving and caring God
  • Learn about Jesus as our Savior and brother
  • Encouraged to continue prayers at home
  • Taught the sign of the cross, the Hail Mary, the Our Father, prayer before meals
  • Offered opportunities for spontaneous prayer



To enroll in Kindergarten, a child must be of the appropriate age by September 1st of that school year.

Academic Information

The curriculum stresses academic achievement within a Catholic community. The Diocesan curricular guidelines, consistent with the Illinois guidelines, are followed.
