Since their founding, the primary mission of the Knights of Columbus has been to protect families from the financial ruin caused by the death of the breadwinner. Learn more about the numerous insurance products available only to members.
As a priest working at the immigrant parish of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, CT, Father McGivney saw firsthand what could happen to a family when the main income earner died. He, himself, was forced to leave his seminary studies to help care for his family when his own father died. So the desire to provide insurance to care for widows and orphans was close to his heart. At the same time in history, there was strong hostility toward Catholics. They were being excluded from social services, labor unions and other fraternal organizations. The dangerous working condition in factories, where most immigrants were employed, left many families fatherless. Feeling strongly that Catholicism and fraternalism were not incompatible, seeing a need for social and intellectual interaction, and wanting to provide an outlet for men to engage in good works and be proud of their American-Catholic heritage, the Knights were born.
The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 14,000 councils and 1.8 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam and Saipan.
We look forward to joining the ranks of this outstanding Catholic men’s organization. For more on how you can be a part, email: Knights@stmarygostyn.org.
